History

Aquilla was born on Alderaan to a family of moderate wealth in 31 BBY. At the age of seven his parents were killed in an accident, and he was placed in the custody of his uncle Rand Aquilla on Coruscant, at the time a trusted aide in the office of then-Sumpreme Chancellor Palpatine. He coordinating a secret project to experiment on the genetic augmentation of humans for use as soldiers (the Republic's Military Creation Act was proposed the next year). Rand was pressured into using Rafe as a test subject, and he ended up being one of it's few successes, but the project was abandoned as the expense and high fatality rate and only marginal enhancement made their solution unfeasible. After creation of the Empire, Rand was commissioned as an officer in it's Imperial Security Bureau, where he has risen to the rank of Lieutenant General.

Rafe saw little of his uncle, and after the program was dissolved was placed into mlitary school, then immediately into the relatively new Imperial Academy where he graduated with honors. Rather than opt for a career with the ISB as his uncle preferred, he joined the Storm Commandos. Having grown up with the influence of his uncle, military school and the Academy, Rafe was a staunch imperial supporter. However, over the years he became disillusioned with the Empire, after witnessing (and committing) horrible acts against it's enemies and even it's own citizens. This culminated with the refusal of an order to execute a small colony of innocent civilians as a 'lesson' to their leader, and even played a role in assisting with the escape of many of them.

He was court-martialed and might have been sentenced to death if not for the timely intervention of his uncle, who despite his willingness to allow experimentation on his nephew still felt some familial obligation to him. He managed to have him dishonorably discharged.

For over a year Rafe did little but drink feel sorry for himself, until a chance encounter with a young woman named Kira Senn - even half drunk he fought off a group of angry locals to save her. Orphaned and alone, she had turned to life as a thief to survive, but was half starving and alone. Suddenly feeling responsible for her, he began to turn his life around. He (mostly) cleaned up, scraped together most of what remained of his inheritance, and bought a ship - a forty-year old D-5 Mantis patrol craft he dubbed the Razor's Edge.

Personality

Hardened by years of battle, he was always fiercely loyal to those who served under him - toward the end even more so than he was to the Empire. He has only recently come to soften, though he always tended toward a bit of a sense of humor, especially in dangerous or tense situations.

Rafe is stronger and faster than the average human, and can take a heavy beating, but is not quite superhuman.
